Weird pregnancy craving combos

Pregnancy cravings are strong urges to eat foods that stem from a desire more than hunger. These cravings are usually hard to resist and they continue to stay until you eat them.

Pregnancy cravings and aversions are common among us pregnant women regardless of what gender baby we have, how far along in the pregnancy we are, or how many children we’ve had.

Typical pregnancy cravings include pickles, ice cream, milk, chocolate, citrus fruits, fruit juice, and sweets.

Pregnancy aversions to food are common as well, partially because of increased nausea during pregnancy and mostly because those foods don’t sound good to them anymore. One researcher interviewed a group of 250 women and found that the most averted foods during pregnancy are meats and vegetables.

Some women crave strange combinations of foods while others will crave foods that are inedible like chalk or dirt.

In this blog, we’ll go over some bizarre pregnancy craving combos as well as the most common ones.

    Sweet and salty combo

Although many snacks in the grocery store now cater to people craving this combination, sweet and salty pregnancy cravings can get a little strange.

    1. Chips and ice cream

    ice cream pregnancy craving

This classic pregnancy craving combo may seem strange, but something about it is appealing when you’re pregnant. The sweet, cold ice cream combined with the salty and crunchy chips is a perfect balance when you’re growing another human. You’ll find ice cream is a common craving among pregnant women since it’s sweet and usually high in calcium.

    2. Pickles and peanut butter

Sweet, sour, salty. This weird pregnancy craving is not a combination for the weak but has everything a pregnant person desires.

    3. Crackers and chocolate spread

This one might not seem as weird as all of the others since crackers go with everything, but crackers with a chocolate spread or even frosting for some reason work together. This is a craving that might even continue after the baby is born.

    4. Fruit and soy sauce

Most pregnant people crave soy sauce with grapefruit, but some admit to craving other fruits with soy sauce too.

Some fruits I’ve seen that fall under his category are watermelon, orange, lemon, and other melons.

The juicy fruit combined with the salty soy sauce somehow satisfies a craving we never thought we’d have.

    5. Pizza and ice cream

Who would have thought that our 2 favorite foods would go so great together? Pizza? Yes. Ice cream? Also, yes. Eating them together? Maybe we’ll save that for the pregnant ladies.

This sweet and salty combo somehow works when the pregnancy hormones are raging through the body.

    6. Chips and marshmallows

    chips and donuts

A common theme among these sweet and salty pregnancy cravings is mixed textures. This combo includes the crunch and salt of chips with the softness and sweetness of marshmallows.

Although it’s not for me, some pregnant women love this combo.

    7. Pretzels and frosting

Even non-pregnant people can agree that this combo is FIRE. Lots of packaged snacks utilize this delicious combo by covering pretzels in chocolate. It’s essentially the same thing, except the frosting adds a little bit more sweetness and a softer texture.

    8. Fruit and mayo

As a pregnant woman, I don’t even think I can get behind this strange pregnancy craving combo.

It makes sense, especially if we have fruit and soy sauce on this list since we have the fruit and salt combo

    Savory and sour combinations

    1. Pickles and Takis

    2. Citrus fruit and salt

    3. Cheese and green grapes

    4. Sour candy and cheddar crackers

    5. Pickles and sour cream

    6. Ramen with pickle juice

    Bizarre non-food cravings

Craving and consuming non food items compulsively is called Pica. Although pica is not exclusive to pregnant people, it is a common phenomenon since pregnancy brings on more cravings than if you’re not pregnant.

Pica can become harmful for you and your baby depending on what you’re consuming. If you are craving or consuming any non-food item, it’s best to consult your doctor so they can test for any deficiencies and possibly provide supplements.

Impact of weird pregnancy craving combinations

Effects on the pregnant woman’s health

Just by looking at the common foods in this pregnancy craving list, you can see that most of the foods aren’t healthy.

Although pregnancy craving combos aren’t dangerous, these cravings are hard to pass by. Craving these unhealthy foods leaves little room for nutrient-dense foods that are beneficial to your health.

Pregnancy food cravings are also detrimental if you have any pregnancy-related health problems such as gestational diabetes.

Women with pica during pregnancy suffer health effects for obvious reasons if they satisfy their cravings. Most of the non-food substances you crave during pregnancy have little to no nutrients and are considered toxic.

If ingested, these non-food cravings could cause abdominal pain, infection, digestion problems, and vomiting.

    Effects on the baby’s health

There’s no doubt that what you eat affects the growing baby(or babies) inside of you. Eating unhealthy food cravings excessively will affect your baby’s growth and development while in the womb.

One notable downside to fulfilling unhealthy cravings is excessive gestational weight gain. Although insufficient weight gain during pregnancy has detrimental effects on a baby’s health and growth, excessive weight gain has been linked to many health risks for both you and your baby.

You can combat excessive gestational weight gain by trying these pregnancy safe workouts.

Eating these food combinations may also cause problems with undernutrition for your baby. If you’re filling up on these unhealthy pregnancy cravings, it leaves little room for the nutrients necessary to grow a healthy baby.

The role of a balanced diet in reducing the impact of weird cravings

Although no studies have shown a connection between typical pregnancy cravings like sweet, salty, and sour food, scientists believe craving non-food items have links to iron and zinc deficiencies.

It’s important to eat a well-balanced diet while you’re pregnant to avoid these cravings as much as possible.

While prenatal pills are an important part of getting your daily nutrients, your diet has a lot to do with growing a healthy baby too.

Scientists recommend a balance of protein, fat, carbohydrates, and fiber to hit all the nutrient points you need during pregnancy.

    Conclusion

Pregnancy cravings aren’t something you should follow because of any deficiencies. Your body doesn’t want these foods for any particular reason other than your body wants them.

Weird pregnancy-craving combos aren’t anything new or out of the ordinary, but some combos are more strange than others. Even if you love to satisfy these bizarre craving combos, be sure that you are balancing it out with a nutrient-rich diet otherwise.

Although most of these foods can cause health problems when eating in excess, moderation will not harm you.

As always, listen to your body and make informed decisions about your health and consult with your doctor if you have any concerns.
