The eagerly anticipated moment of meeting your little one is just around the corner, and if you are nearing your due date, you might be exploring safe and natural ways to encourage labor. One method that has gained popularity(and worked for me) is breast stimulation and pumping. In this blog post, we will delve into why breast stimulation is considered one of the top ways to induce labor, and explore the science and benefits behind this gentle approach as well as how it worked for me.
The Oxytocin Connection:
Breast stimulation, whether through manual massage or pumping, triggers the release of a hormone called oxytocin. Oxytocin, often referred to as the “love hormone” or “bonding hormone,” plays a pivotal role in childbirth. When oxytocin is released, it helps initiate and regulate contractions, ultimately leading to the onset of labor. Discover how this natural process can help nudge your body towards childbirth in a safe and gentle manner.
I was 38 weeks pregnant when I decided to pump to try to induce labor. Before this I was eating dates, stretching, drinking raspberry leaf tea and laying in positions to try to induce labor.
I can’t say if pumping is what kickstarted my labor process, but the very next day after pumping for 20 minutes with my Spectra S2 Electric Breast Pump, I had contractions.

Natural and Safe Method:
One of the most significant advantages of breast stimulation as a labor-inducing technique is that it is entirely natural and non-invasive. Unlike medical interventions, breast stimulation carries little to no risk for both mother and baby when done correctly.
Breast stimulation is what releases the hormones that kickstart your labor. For me, using a breast pump was the easiest way. After seeing all of the success stories online, I had to try it myself. With zero regrets, I went into labor the next day after pumping.
Luckily, I had a Spectra S2 pump on hand to help me.
I used the stimulation mode which pumps 70 times per minute at level 3 strength which seemed to do the trick. No milk or colostrum came out, but by 10 am the next day, I had my first contraction.

Encouraging Labor Progression:
Beyond initiating contractions, breast stimulation can also help facilitate labor progression. As contractions become more regular and intense, they play a crucial role in dilating the cervix and encouraging the descent of the baby through the birth canal. Learn how consistent breast stimulation can contribute to a smoother and more efficient labor experience.
Although I didn’t use pumping for labor progression, I can see how it would help. Luckily, my labor progressed rather quickly as soon as my contractions started. Had my contractions stayed consistent for too long, I would have pumped again to try and progress further.
The wearable pump by MomMed would be perfect to bring to a hospital or delivery room for on-the-go breast stimulation. I currently have this
Emotional and Bonding Benefits:
Apart from its physical effects, breast stimulation offers emotional benefits for both mom and baby. The act of nurturing and bonding through skin-to-skin contact during breast stimulation releases a surge of positive emotions. This emotional connection between mother and baby can create a conducive environment for labor and enhance the overall birthing experience.
Combining Breast Stimulation with Relaxation Techniques:
To optimize the effectiveness of breast stimulation, we will explore how combining it with relaxation techniques can amplify its impact. Relaxation not only helps manage any discomfort during contractions but also reduces stress hormones, further promoting a positive birthing environment.
Although relaxation will help the effectiveness of breast stimulation on inducing labor, multitasking while pumping did the trick for me.
I was able to use a pumping bra so that my hands were free to do some work on my laptop.
Now, companies have created cordless pumps that go right into your bra. I bought the MomMed Hands Free Pump and I have no regrets. I use it about 50% of the time when I need to pump and have my hands free at the same time.
I’ve written my complete review after using this for one month.
Conclusion:
While it’s essential to remember that every woman’s body and labor journey is unique, breast stimulation and pumping have shown promising results in naturally inducing labor for many expectant mothers. Embracing this gentle and safe approach can help you align with your body’s natural rhythm and prepare for the beautiful moment when you finally meet your newborn. However, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider before trying any labor-inducing techniques to ensure they are appropriate for your specific situation. As you anticipate the arrival of your little one, remember to stay positive, stay informed, and trust in the incredible strength of your body and the miracle of childbirth.
